Crypto Market
The week’s tradable anomalies, the catalysts behind them, and how last week’s calls played out.

A token suddenly dominating crypto Twitter, whales dumping ETH, price spiking while network usage flatlines — you get the gist. We call these anomalies, and they often lead to trading opportunities.

This week we lead with the setups worth acting on, give you the market backdrop they sit against, and grade how last week’s calls actually played out. Let’s dig in!

This Week in Brief

  • Zcash, ZEC: the only asset to hit two attention signals at once, up 56% to a ten-year high, and now the seventh-largest crypto by market cap.
  • Venice Token, VVV: up 53% with volume 26 times its baseline, the only asset holding positive sentiment on both readings, and still triggering when the window closed.
  • Dash, DASH: up 52% on the privacy narrative, but volume peaked a day before price and the sentiment flipped from +6.50 to -0.49.

Privacy was the trade of the week. All three assets are related to it, and each are in a different scenario.

Market Backdrop

Bitcoin mostly went sideways. It jumped to $81.3K on September 3, then spent the rest of the window between $78K and $81K, finishing near $79K — up about 1.9%. Ether did slightly better, rising from $2,391 to $2,494, roughly +4.3%. Neither has cleared its September 3 high.

That flat majors backdrop is what makes this week’s setups notable. Zcash, Dash, and Venice Token each gained more than 50% while Bitcoin moved 2%. This was a narrative-based move, not a rising market lifting everything.

Positioning got extreme. 'hyperliquid_avg_funding_rate' fired once, reaching -85.91 on September 8 against a trigger level of -20. We saw -53 on August 15th, +46.91 on August 21st, -72.58 on August 31st, and -85.91 on September 8th. As we noted last week, this is a venue-wide average across Hyperliquid’s markets, so it is measuring how hard traders are shorting long-tail alt-coins.

Large ETH holders stayed quiet. 'eth_whale_dump' fired four times, with a peak of about $4.91M on September 5. That peak is the smallest in six weeks, and roughly a ninth of the $40.99M reading from the week of August 22. Whales have now spent two weeks not selling into strength.

This Week’s Trading Setups

1. Zcash (ZEC)

Signal: social_dominance_spike + project_in_trends · Lean: Short bias, low conviction

What’s anomalous. Zcash hit two attention signals in the same week, the only asset to do so. 'project_in_trends' fired three times with a peak of 426.17 on September 7 — the highest trend score of the week, ahead of both Bitcoin and Ether. 'social_dominance_spike' fired four times, peaking at 4.40 on September 4. Sentiment read +4.01 on the spike day and has since turned to -0.43. Market cap is about $20.88B.

These signals were expected. Social dominance measures an asset’s share of crypto conversation, so a 56% weekly price move is highly likely to draw public attention.

Take a look at when the crowd showed up and when it left. Zcash averaged about 31 mentions a day through mid-August, reaching 391 on September 6 — 12.5 times that baseline — with sentiment balance running from 0.36 on September 2 to 31.2 on September 6. That is what euphoria looks like. Then price kept climbing and the crowd did not follow: from September 6 to September 9 price rose 3.4% to a new high near $1,270, while mentions fell 43% and sentiment balance fell 79%.

Why. The price action, clearly. Though Grayscale’s spot ZEC fund is the most-cited catalyst — ZCSH listed on NYSE Arca on August 25 and has grown from roughly $300M to more than $500M. Real institutional demand, but small compared to the trading: about $45M of inflows last week against $10.55B of ZEC volume. The fund might be one catalyst, but it is likely not the engine, which means the bid carrying price is likely speculative.

The privacy narrative matters to the public too. Privacy coins have gained 213% since Bitcoin’s October 2025 peak, the only major sector to perform that well.

What to watch. The crowd. On this asset the social data is the clearest read we have on positioning. Price and euphoria peaking together is a dangerous combination. Sentiment staying negative while mentions drift back toward baseline would confirm it.

The takeaway: The question now is what is more likely? That this is a local top, or that ZEC will continue higher. We think the former is more likely at this point.

Trader tip: size small because the odds are close. We lean short, but up, down, or sideways are all possible over the next week.

2. Venice Token (VVV)

Signal: social_dominance_spike · Lean: Long bias, medium conviction

What’s anomalous. 'social_dominance_spike' fired three times, peaking at 6.20 on September 9 at 05:00 UTC — the last hour of the window, so this one was still running when we stopped counting. Sentiment read +0.43 on the spike day and is still +0.43 now, the only asset we selected that did not turn negative. Market cap is about $1.34B.

Price went from $16.15 on September 2 to $24.65, about +53%, with most of it in one session: $18.43 on September 7 to $25.99 on September 8, a 41% day that set an all-time high. Take a look at the volume behind it. VVV traded $8.46M on September 6, the quietest day of the window, then $193M on September 8 and $265M on September 9 — roughly 26 times that baseline.

Why. Three things landed within five days. Kalshi listed VVV perpetual futures on September 4, putting the token on a CFTC-regulated venue. AI tokens rose broadly on September 7 on anticipation of Anthropic’s public listing. Then on September 8, NEAR Protocol announced a partnership covering confidential VVV swaps and staking, with Venice’s encryption running on NEAR AI Cloud.

The business underneath is real. Venice.ai, founded by ShapeShift’s Erik Voorhees, sells AI inference without logging queries, and reported 3.5M users and more than $100M in annualized revenue in August. A share of that revenue buys VVV on the open market and burns it.

What to watch. The crowd is still arriving here rather than leaving, which is the opposite of Zcash. Watch social volume and whether sentiment remains positive as price consolidates.

The takeaway: Sentiment still positive, volume 26 times baseline, and the signal firing in the final hour of the window. We expect this one to go sideways now, with small chance of going higher.

Trader tip: Size smaller when trading price highs.

3. Dash (DASH)

Signal: social_dominance_spike · Lean: Mean-reversion, short bias, medium conviction

What’s anomalous. 'social_dominance_spike' fired four times, peaking at 6.17 on September 5. Sentiment read +6.50 on the spike day, the most positive reading of the week, and has already fallen to -0.49 — the sharpest reversal in this week’s data. Market cap is about $839.72M.

Price went from $42.64 on September 2 to $71.14 on September 6, up 67%, then eased to $64.69. Take a look at the order of events. Volume peaked at $492M on September 5, price peaked a day later, and volume has since drained to $187M while price gave back 9%. Dash also traded 54.6% of its own market cap in a single day, the highest ratio among major assets — Zcash was 7.4%, Ether 5.5%, Bitcoin 2.3%.

Why. Overflow from Zcash, most likely. When the largest privacy name reprices, smaller ones in the same category tend to get the spillover, and Dash is thinner than ZEC, so the same flow moves it further.

One piece of supporting news. DashCon 2026 in Amsterdam, the project’s first major conference since 2019, brought announcements on AI integration with shielded payments and mobile privacy features due in Android beta this month.

What to watch. Sentiment has already flipped from +6.50 to -0.49, so the crowd turned while price sits near its high. The $58–$60 band capped every rally attempt since January and is now the level underneath. Watch whether volume keeps declining.

The takeaway: Volume peaking before price, with the sharpest sentiment reversal of the week, is the clearest bearish pattern in this week’s data. We expect Dash to give back some of this move.

Trader tip: Compare an asset’s daily volume with its market cap — Dash traded 54.6% of its own value in a day against Zcash’s 7.4%, which is what a thin book looks like when speculative money arrives.

Last Week’s Scorecard

Scorecard read: Two of three played out. Uniswap was the cleanest — we said it did not look exhausted and it added 24% before settling up 13%. Solana did what we described, though to be honest that prediction was both downside and sideways.

Chainlink is the one worth looking at, because we were right, just early. The dormant-holder thesis worked — LINK topped at $13.70 on September 7 and has since cooled 15% to $11.62, now below the $11.945 level where those two-year-old coins moved on August 27. But it ran 23% above our $11.105 first. Anyone who acted on the call immediately was deep underwater before the thesis eventually paid.

Often times timing is more important than analysis. Our exhaustion calls have been directionally sound but consistently early, which is why the Zcash setup above says size small and calls the odds close instead of presenting a short as a clean trade. Being a week early on a top call is not the same as being completely wrong, but it can cost a lot if the position is too large to sit through. Famously, that’s what almost happened to Michael Burry in his big short of the mortgage crisis.

What Else Triggered

Jasmy, JASMY posted the largest dormant-supply reading of the week. 'old_coins_moved' recorded 14.90 times its trigger level: about 1.6% of circulating supply moved, untouched for an average of 714 days. Nearly two-year-old coins, and price fell 10.2% over the window, from $0.004608 to $0.004140. Of the 31 assets that triggered, this is the one where old supply moving and price falling line up.

GateChain Token, GT led the 'price_network_activity_divergence' signal at 9.20 on September 6, ahead of pUniswap(Uniswap on polygon) at 7.01 and PROM at 5.81. Unlike recent weeks, the leaders here are not a single outlier — three assets clustered above 5, so price ran ahead of network growth across several names rather than one.

via app.santiment.net

Solana, SOL and Shiba Inu, SHIB each took two 'project_in_trends' prints, peaking at 127.62 and 93.83 on September 7. Both sit far below Zcash’s 426.17, so the attention this week was concentrated in one name rather than spread across the majors.

No-shows this week: 'social_price_correlation' and 'social_dev_score' produced no eligible events.

Worth Watching

  • Zcash, ZEC: reversal depends on sentiment staying negative alongside declining social volume.
  • Venice Token, VVV: good fundamentals, sentiment and social volume are worth tracking.
  • Dash, DASH: many red flags, indicating a bearish future.
  • 'hyperliquid_avg_funding_rate' at -85.91, its most extreme reading in four weeks.

Full Trigger Table

Between 2026-09-02 09:00 and 2026-09-09 05:00 UTC, 212 trigger observations fired across 7 of the 9 tracked anomaly types, spanning 129 signal-and-asset entries.

Market-cap filter: latest_marketcap_usd > $50M.

Anomalies We Track

  • Network Activity & Price Divergence Anomaly — detects price surges that are not accompanied by a corresponding rise in network activity (real growth). Triggered only if price growth exceeds 3% on the same day, ensuring the alert is relevant for significant bullish moves.
  • Project in Trends Anomaly — detects when a specific crypto token gains significant traction in online discussions, placing it among the top 10 most-mentioned words in crypto-related conversations.
  • Old Coins Moved Anomaly — detects unusually large amount of long-dormant supply moving, measured against each asset’s own recent history. Triggers above 1.5 times that baseline. A trigger shows old coins moved, not that anyone sold them.
  • Large USDC-USDT Mint Anomaly — detects daily combined $1 billion or larger minting events of USDC and USDT stablecoins on the Ethereum blockchain.
  • Social Price Correlation Anomaly — detects whether social sentiment and price are behaving in an unusually aligned or unusually decoupled way. Currently runs on 1h X.com social data for BTC, ETH, SOL, DOGE, XRP, TRX, and ADA.
  • Social Dominance Spike Anomaly — detects abnormal spikes in social dominance. Alerts when values exceed a statistical significance threshold of 3 standard deviations over 30 days.
  • Social-Dev Score Anomaly — detects unusual activity compared to the recent 30-day history of social media metrics and development activity. The score is weighted 60/40 for social and dev activity.
  • Hyperliquid Average Funding Rates Anomaly — detects when rates exceed predefined high/low thresholds of +40% and -20%, measured hourly.
  • ETH Whale Dump Anomaly — detects potential large-scale ETH dumps by monitoring whale wallet behaviors. Uses a 500 ETH threshold and a 30-day holding period to distinguish normal trading from potential dump scenarios.
