The Weekly Anomaly Report: September 23rd – 30th

A token suddenly dominating crypto Twitter, whales dumping ETH, price spiking while network usage flatlines — you get the gist. We call these anomalies, and they often lead to trading opportunities.
If you’re new here, we usually cover the trading setups potentially worth acting on, give you the market backdrop they sit against, and grade how last week’s predictions actually played out. Let’s dig in!
This Week in Brief
- Quant, QNT: four signals fired this week, and the crowd’s two emotional extremes marked a local top and the next day low that followed.
- Ondo Finance, ONDO: coins dormant for an average of nearly three years moved the day before a launch built on BlackRock strategies sent it up 27%.
- Litecoin, LTC: $1 billion moved across the network in a day, but active addresses barely changed.
Market Backdrop
The majors went nowhere. Bitcoin moved from $84.4K on September 23 to $83.6K on September 29, down about 0.9%, inside a narrow range. Ether was flatter still, from $2,684 to $2,677. Both digesting the recent moves up.
The market moved around the tokenization narrative. On September 24, Quant landed a role in The Clearing House’s on-chain money initiative and Ondo launched tokenized portfolios built on BlackRock strategies. Quant rose 28% that day and Ondo 27%. Litecoin rose 16% the same day on separate news, an ETF filing and a short squeeze. Money rotated into a theme while Bitcoin consolidated following its recent move up.
The crowd’s appetite for leverage cooled. 'hyperliquid_avg_funding_rate' fired once, reaching 23.66% annualized on September 25, just above the 22.99% threshold that marks the top 2% of readings — down from ten triggers the week before. The crowd is still leaning long, but far less heavily.
Large ETH holders eased off too. 'eth_whale_dump' fired four times between September 23 and 29, peaking at $5.89M on September 29, versus nine events and a $13.98M peak last week.

This Week’s Trading Setups
1. Quant (QNT)
Signal: social_dominance_spike + project_in_trends + price_network_activity_divergence + old_coins_moved · Lean: Volatility, non-directional, medium conviction
What’s anomalous: Quant fired four signals this week. 'social_dominance_spike' fired eight times, peaking at 6.87 on September 28, and 'project_in_trends' fired five times, peaking at 1.45K the same day. 'price_network_activity_divergence' flagged it on September 29. 'old_coins_moved' recorded 2.14 times its trigger level: about 3.1% of circulating supply moved, untouched for an average of 99 days, on September 25. Market cap is about $3.22B.
These signals were expected given the massive price runup. QNT went from $70.63 on September 23 to $285.38 on September 27, up 304%.
Take a look at how the crowd behaved. Mentions averaged about 21 a day before the news. Sentiment balance, which nets positive mentions against negative ones, peaked at 16.04 on September 27, the same day price topped. The next day price fell 19%, sentiment flipped to -3.05, and the crowd was at its loudest, at 446 mentions — about 21 times baseline. Price then bounced 16% on September 29 as mentions fell 59%, and the token traded near $296 on September 30, above the September 27 high. The euphoria marked a local top, and the fear marked the low that followed, a day apart.
Why: The price action, clearly. The catalyst for it is quite concrete. On September 24, The Clearing House selected Quant to support its on-chain money initiative, handling interoperability, orchestration, and transaction management while integrating with the RTP and CHIPS payment rails, with access for participating institutions planned for the first half of 2027. The same day, UK Finance announced the first live customer transactions using tokenized sterling deposits on Quant’s platform.
Two other bits of context. One report flagged wash trading and sell pressure on $710M of volume as the move accelerated, and spot flows flipped from a $13M net inflow to roughly $5.66M in net outflows on September 28.
What to watch: The crowd’s next extreme. Twice this week a peak in sentiment or attention marked a turn within a day, once at a local top and once at the low that followed. Watch for sentiment balance spiking back above 16 or turning sharply negative again.
The takeaway: On a genuine bank-backed catalyst, the crowd’s euphoria marked a local top and its fear marked the low that followed, a day apart. We expect another large move, and would let the next sentiment extreme decide the direction rather than pick one now.

Trader tip: when a crowd swings from euphoria to fear inside a day, treat that kind of extreme as a possible turning point.
2. Ondo Finance (ONDO)
Signal: social_dominance_spike + old_coins_moved · Lean: Short bias, low conviction
What’s anomalous: 'social_dominance_spike' fired three times, peaking at 7.40 on September 25, above Quant’s 6.87. 'old_coins_moved' recorded 21.60 times its trigger level: about 4.8% of circulating supply moved, untouched for an average of 1,026 days. Market cap is about $2.44B.
The date is what stands out. Coins that had sat an average of nearly three years moved on September 23. The next day Ondo announced a product built on BlackRock strategies and price jumped 27%, from $0.4126 to $0.5237.
Take a look at the crowd around it. Sentiment balance spiked to 44.73 on the announcement day, then was down to 1.54 by September 27, when price made its high at $0.5889. Price has fallen 15% since, to $0.5018.
Why: The portfolio launch, clearly. On September 24, Ondo introduced Ondo Intelligent Portfolios — three tokenized portfolios built on model strategies developed by BlackRock and rebalanced by smart contract, offered to eligible investors outside the U.S. Spot volume passed $2B the next day, roughly four times the monthly average.
One bit of news cuts the other way. Founder Nathan Allman died in May 2026, a legal fight over control of the company followed, and CoinDesk reported on September 24 that Ondo was shopped to potential buyers after his death, which management denied.
What to watch: The fundamentals, whether the crowd’s excitement returns, and exchange flows. What happens next will be determined by just how much of those old coins actually end up sold and whether the speculative new investors can absorb it or outperform it.
The takeaway: A launch built on BlackRock strategies lifted Ondo 27% in a day, but the crowd’s enthusiasm faded before price peaked, and the company still carries a control dispute. We lean toward a further pullback.

Trader tip: separate a headline’s first-day reaction from the trend that follows — Ondo’s sentiment had fallen from 44.73 to 1.54 by the time price topped.
3. Litecoin (LTC)
Signal: social_dominance_spike + project_in_trends + price_network_activity_divergence · Lean: Mean-reversion, low conviction
What’s anomalous: Litecoin fired three signals. 'social_dominance_spike' fired twice, peaking at 5.40 on September 25, 'project_in_trends' printed once at 207.78 on September 24, and 'price_network_activity_divergence' flagged it on September 26. Market cap is about $5.19B.
The divergence holds over the full week, though it is mild. Price rose 8.0% from September 23 to September 29, peaking at $72.63 on September 26, while daily active addresses only rose 2.3%. Sentiment balance peaked at 11.30 on September 25, a day before price topped, then turned negative as it fell.
Take a look at who moved tokens. The Litecoin Foundation reported more than 17 million LTC, worth about $1 billion, moving on the network on September 23, they call it “adjusted economic volume.” Active addresses didn’t rise to match — they held between about 254,000 and 264,000 from September 21 to 23. That much value moving with no rise in active addresses is likely just large holders repositioning rather than a crowd arriving.
Why: The price action and a filing. On September 24, LTC broke out of the range it had traded in through most of September. The move came alongside a Grayscale filing to convert its Litecoin Trust into an ETF under the ticker LTCN, pending approval. Short sellers forced to cover added fuel as it ran.
What to watch: Whether active addresses increase, indicating real growth. An approved ETF is a positive, since it may bring buyers the network has not yet seen. Until then, price running ahead of active addresses on a mature network points towards a speculative premium, not a price increase due to any real growth.
The takeaway: Price jumped 16% in a day on a filing and a short squeeze, while active addresses barely moved. We lean toward a pullback into the former September range, unless the ETF is approved.

Trader tip: Always ask yourself what is driving a move and what might invalidate it.
Last Week’s Scorecard

Scorecard read: One played out, one partial, one miss. Zcash was the clean one: we predicted a pullback for weeks and were early, and this week it came, 13% off the recent high. That is also the pattern to watch in Quant and Ondo above — a new high on a thinning crowd.
Telcoin is the more interesting result. We said the dormant holders would likely do it again, and they did, with a third trigger on September 29, one day after a new high. What we got wrong is the expected price action, it just didn’t fall right away, though we still expect it to. We’ll add this prediction to the scorecard for next week to see how it plays out.
What Else Triggered
'old_coins_moved' fired for 30 assets this week. Beyond Ondo and Quant, among the strongest readings:
- Unus Sed Leo, LEO: 52.51 times its trigger level, though only about 0.04% of supply moved, dormant 467 days, on September 26. It is Bitfinex’s exchange token. Price is flat since, up 0.4%.
- Immutable X, IMX: 10.15 times, about 1.9% of supply, dormant 515 days, on September 29.
- Telcoin, TEL: 2.90 times, about 1.1% of supply, dormant 361 days, on September 29 — its third trigger in three weeks.
- XRP: 2.86 times, about 3.2% of supply, dormant 200 days, on September 25 — its fourth trigger since mid-August. Price has fallen 5.0% since.
No-shows this week: 'social_price_correlation' and 'social_dev_score' produced no eligible events.
Worth Watching
- Quant, QNT: whether sentiment balance spikes back above 16 or turns sharply negative.
- Ondo Finance, ONDO: whether sentiment shows any positive momentum moving forward.
- Litecoin, LTC: whether the ETF gets approved, it may bring in a wave of buyers.
- Telcoin, TEL: whether the recently moved tokens actually get sold, monitor exchange volumes.

Anomalies We Track
- Network Activity & Price Divergence Anomaly — detects price surges that are not accompanied by a corresponding rise in network activity (real growth). Triggered only if price growth exceeds 3% on the same day, ensuring the alert is relevant for significant bullish moves.
- Project in Trends Anomaly — detects when a specific crypto token gains significant traction in online discussions, placing it among the top 10 most-mentioned words in crypto-related conversations.
- Old Coins Moved Anomaly — detects unusually large amount of long-dormant supply moving, measured against each asset’s own recent history. Triggers above 1.5 times that baseline. A trigger shows old coins moved, not that anyone sold them.
- Large USDC-USDT Mint Anomaly — detects daily combined $1 billion or larger minting events of USDC and USDT stablecoins on the Ethereum blockchain.
- Social Price Correlation Anomaly — detects whether social sentiment and price are behaving in an unusually aligned or unusually decoupled way. Currently runs on 1h X.com social data for bitcoin, ethereum, solana, dogecoin, xrp, trx, and cardano.
- Social Dominance Spike Anomaly — detects abnormal spikes in social dominance. Alerts when values exceed a statistical significance threshold of 3 standard deviations over 30 days.
- Social-Dev Score Anomaly — detects unusual activity compared to the recent 30-day history of social media metrics and development activity. The score is weighted 60/40 for social and dev activity.
- Hyperliquid Average Funding Rates Anomaly — detects when rates exceed predefined high/low thresholds of +40% and -20%, measured hourly.
- ETH Whale Dump Anomaly — detects potential large-scale ETH dumps by monitoring whale wallet behaviors. Uses a 500 ETH threshold and a 30-day holding period to distinguish normal trading from potential dump scenarios.
